The Virginia Department of State Police Criminal Justice Information Services Division operates the Central Criminal Records Exchange, or CCRE. A public Virginia name check uses SP-167 and the subject's signed, notarized consent. The VSP CATS interface generates the request form; it does not show instant results. The completed form goes to CCRE by mail. A standard criminal-history search costs $15, while a combined history and sex-offender search costs $20.

Kinds of Criminal Records
King William County criminal records are created at different points. An officer writes the incident or arrest report. A custodial facility creates the booking file. A magistrate and court clerks create process and docket entries. VSP receives reportable arrest and disposition data for CCRE, while VADOC maintains state custody and supervision records. The sex-offender registry is yet another system, built for public safety notification rather than as a list of all convictions.

- Custody and registry records: limited public VADOC status or separate VSP registry information.
Why King William County Records Differ
A booking entry answers whether a person entered custody and what charge was presented then. A court file answers what the Commonwealth filed and how the judge resolved it. A CCRE response answers what qualifying Virginia arrest and disposition data reached the central repository under that product's rules. The three should not be treated as copies of one master record.
A charge may be amended, dismissed, or replaced after arrest. Reporting can lag. An alias or name spelling can break a match. A public name-only CCRE response chiefly returns Virginia convictions and expressly does not prove that no arrest exists. When an outcome matters, compare OCIS with the signed clerk order and the relevant agency or CCRE record.

Trace a King William County Arrest
King William County does not publish a verified daily arrest blotter or county inmate roster. Call KWSO at 804-769-0999 when a county deputy was involved and ask where the person was booked. West Point Police keeps its own town-originated reports. VSP handles trooper reports. The Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center is the regional custody source, while Virginia VINE supplies custody notifications. OCIS may show the later court case, but filing can lag the arrest.

VADOC updates its public data daily and warns that a result may be incomplete or out of date, so it should not replace the regional custody route for a recent arrest.
Virginia Public Access Laws
The Virginia Freedom of Information Act provides a request process for qualifying public records, but it does not turn each office into one countywide criminal-history repository. Virginia law treats law-enforcement material, court copies, CCRE dissemination, expungement, and registry access under distinct provisions. The fastest route is usually the office that created or keeps the exact record.

King William County FOIA Record Requests
The King William County FOIA page accepts online, telephone, email, and in-person requests. A request need not be written or use the term FOIA. The county normally responds within five working days by producing records, citing a withholding basis, producing part, stating that records cannot be found, or invoking seven more working days when response is not practical in the first period.
Route sheriff, court, and prosecutor records to their independent custodians. County administration at 180 Horse Landing Road is not the substitute criminal-record counter.
Costs may not exceed the actual expense of access, duplication, supply, or search. Ask for an estimate and narrow the request by incident number, date range, place, and record type. Advance payment may be required when the projected cost exceeds $200, and an unpaid balance over 30 days may pause a later request.
Note: The five-day rule governs the response, not a promise that exempt or nonexistent records will be released.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
Juvenile matters, protective orders, certain mental-health proceedings, sealed process, and protected personal facts may be absent or redacted from public systems. That absence does not prove that no proceeding occurred. Under the version of Va. Code §19.2-392.2 effective before December 1, 2026, qualifying acquittals, nolle prosequi outcomes, dismissals, and identity misuse can support a petition in the Circuit Court where the case ended.

The statute page publishes more than one effective version because major changes take effect December 1, 2026. Use the version in force on the filing date. After an order, verify the result separately in OCIS, CCRE, and the originating agency because independent systems do not all update at once.
King William County Custody and Supervision
Recent local custody, state imprisonment, probation, and parole use different records. MPRSC is the regional route for a recent King William County booking. VADOC runs state prisons and adult probation and parole through district offices. Its locator can search by the first three letters of a first name plus the full last name, or by a seven-digit DOC number, with optional location, race, gender, and age filters.
The official VADOC locator explains that statewide layer, but its result is not the full supervision file. The court sentence remains in the clerk record, and the Virginia Parole Board handles eligible release decisions while VADOC performs community supervision.
King William County Court Record Routes
General District Court hears misdemeanors and traffic matters and starts felony cases with advisement and a preliminary hearing. Circuit Court receives felonies after certification or indictment and hears appeals from General District Court. This split can create two related OCIS entries. Circuit terms begin on the first Monday of February, April, June, August, October, and December, with the grand jury at 9:00 a.m. on term day.

King William County Warrant and Registry Checks
No official KWSO active-warrant portal or verified sheriff app was found. Call KWSO, the issuing clerk, or counsel to confirm process. OCIS can reveal a capias or related case event, but it is not a complete real-time warrant list. Unexecuted warrants, sealed indictments, juvenile process, and investigative details may be restricted. Resolving a warrant does not itself erase the underlying case or CCRE entry.
For community registry information, use the separate King William County sex offender lookup and the VSP public registry. A registry search is not a general conviction search, and the information may not be used to intimidate or harass.
